California Gurls meet their MSTR

MSTRKRFT is back! After laying low since the release of Fist of God they finally work their way back into my ears with a remix of Katy Perry’s undeniably catchy “California Gurls.” The first time I actually listened to “California Gurls” was the day before yesterday on a rare occasion that I was listening to the radio and they played more than one song in a row. The song began to play and as I heard the opening synths I questioned if I was actually going to hear some electro on the radio – then Katy Perry started singing. I listened to the whole song but was a little over it by the end. I’m not a fan of Kate Perry’s music – this is only the second time I’ve given one of her songs my attention – but there is no denying her presence in American pop-music.

Anecdote aside, MSTRKRFT made a really nice remix of “California Gurls”  although the sound is a little different  from previous remixes of theirs. I’m sure there will be plenty of nay-sayers claiming “MSTRKRFT used to be good,” and whatever else the haters usually say, but I think this remix is hot. They don’t mess with the vocals all that much so you can sing right along and it hits nice and hard. It seems to me that the MSTRKRFT boys have been getting cozy with their new label-mates Mustard Pimp or something cause those build-ups and drops aren’t what I’m used to hearing from oft Jason-masked duo. They took a song that is cancerous with pop-goodness and injected it with some heavy hitting synths to give it an extra needed umph. I think it works and imma be blasting this one all summer! I can’t wait to hear more from MSTRKRFT in the future…LP3???

BONUS: Katy Perry vs. Bloc Party – “I Kissed A Banquet” <— The only other Katy Perry song I will listen to.

Be Rad. Enjoy.
