Thursday Theatricals 4 // “In Public” by Ryan Kohler

with 5 comments

In Public is a skate video starring a plethora of skateboarders from East County, San Diego.

It was produced and edited by Ryan Kohler, with the financial support of Hanger 94. I was lucky enough to befriend Ryan while simultaneously being sponsored by Hanger 94 and I am ever-so thankful that I was presented with the opportunity to be a part of this video. While I only contributed a few tricks, the video as a whole perfectly exemplifies what it was like growing up as a skateboarder in the late 90s and early 2000’s.

I think Ryan said it best, “skateboarding, friends, and a bunch of other funny stuff.

In Public will forever live on in the hearts of East County skateboarders. The physical DVD is out there and it is a treasure I will always cherish.

Be Rad. Enjoy.

Chilly Gonzales, formerly just Gonzales, is an artist whose music you are probably familiar with, but you don’t even know it. His song, “Never Stop,” is that catchy, snappy, poppy little piano tune used for the famous Apple iPad commercials. Or maybe you’ll recognize it as the song Comedy Central used to promote the new season of South Park earlier this year. Either way, you’ve probably heard the song and now you know who it is by: Chilly Gonzales.

Introduction aside, let’s get to business. Earlier this year, Chilly Gonzales put out the mixtape “Pianist Envy” that was a piano driven symphony of sorts. It included tracks by Beyonce, 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes, but most importantly, Daft Punk. Chilly laid some serious piano work over the Daft Punk track “Rollin’ and Scratchin'” along with a nice monologue by and fron Rocky Balboa. The monologue is genuinely inspiring and combined with the punching frenzy of ivory keys by Gonzales with the ominous electro sounds of Daft Punk, this is one of the best remixes I’ve heard. Ever.

Now, if the song alone isn’t rad enough for you, Jonathan Barré went ahead and produced quite the music video for the remix. Check out the video below and be prepared to be inspired – in a cheesy, sports montage kind of way. This song and video combination will definitely give you the sudden urge to do something.

Pick up the “Pianst Envy” mixtape here or just download the Daft Punk remix below.

Be Rad. Enjoy.

Seriously though, I know you want to go accomplish something right now, so get all Rocky Balboa with it and get to it! That’s how winnin’ is done.

I am so excited to see the new TRON movie. I also am very excited for it’s potentially epic soundtrack created by none-other than Daft Punk. But rather than talk about those again, let’s mix it up…literally.

Here we have a mash-up video of the audio from a TRON: Legacy movie trailer – trailer number 3 to be exact – mashed up with scenes from Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory. This is a very well done video.

So, ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, “Wonka: Legacy.”

Be Rad. Enjoy.

New feature! How fun, right?!

I come across lots and lots of videos and rather than just dumping them on here randomly, I am going to starting gathering my favorites and posting them here every Thursday. Sounds like a good time to me. So let’s get started.

The two following videos are short animated stories that are sure to ignite your inner child. Or, at the least, make you smile. What I like most about these videos are the amazing worlds created in both. Last night at dinner, my girlfriend and I were talking about our favorite “sci-fi” ideas and themes as children. While she was able to easily distinguish that her’s was time travel, I struggled to identify mine. Then I recalled my obsession with our Solar System: moon craters, Martian landscapes, Saturn’s rings, etc. To this day, there is nothing more exhilarating to me than letting your imaginative inhibitions go and drifting off to another world. From underwater caverns to a soaked city-space, these two videos are sure to take you for a ride. So sit back, grab a cup of joe, or maybe even a glass of wine, and enjoy the show.

Be Rad. Enjoy.

And be sure to come back next Thursday for the next installment…
