Wow. I slacked hard on getting this list out. Well, January is almost over, so, here it is. The best rad songs of 2010. Lots of catchy, fun, and upbeat tracks on this little list – so if anything, it will start some radness and probably make you wanna shake your groove thing. Feel free to let me know what you think of this year’s selections.
15. “Barbra Streisand” by Duck Sauce
Where would a “Best of 2010” list be without Duck Sauce and “Barbra Streisand?” This song really threw everyone for a loop this summer. It was in such high demand that it got remixed before it was even a real song. To be truthful, O-God’s remix is still my favorite mix of “the song.” Anyway, the original is fun and sure to get something going, so get at it already. Check the fun video here.
14. “Difficult” by Uffie
Uffie lays down her lady MC skills on “Difficult” and, with production by the illustrious SebastiAn, the song has a distinct sound that is sure to penetrate your ears. Super catchy and hella hard, you will find it difficult to resist the urge to sing “don’t worry if I write rhymes; I write checks,” with a badass attitude. Don’t believe me? Just listen to the song. Watch the video here.
13. “Yeah” by Boys Noize
This song is just pure electro energy. With a song name like “Yeah,” you can’t help but feel the “yeah” of this song. The build ups and drops will have your attention from start to finish. Fun fun for everyone, yeah?
12. “Holidays” by Miami Horror
I know we are currently in the heart of winter but, with this song, you might forget it. More energy coming your way with this little jam; lots and lots of sunshiny beats and melodies. Dare I say it makes me fell like I am on holiday? The video is, kind of, ummm….weird?
11. “Promised Land” by Findlay Brown
Considering the context of this song, it should be my favorite cover song of 2010. Findlay Brown takes the Chicago house classic by Joe Smooth and turns it into a song that sounds like it should be playing from my local classic rock radio station – yes it’s that good. Familiar, fresh, and full of soul, this song really surprised me toward the last bit of the year. If you’re feeling a bit naughty, check the NSFW video (there’s a little boobage).
10. “I Think I Like U2” by Jamaica
Jamaica came through with a really solid debut album, No Problem. “I Think I like U2” was the first single of the album and I think it holds up as the strongest. So catchy and fun. I’m getting so lazy, catchy and fun – geez – I could probably say it for every song on this list. Oh well, let’s keep the rad going. Be sure to watch the video: mockumentary of a band that just started – so rad!
9. “Crave You (feat. Giselle)” by Flight Facilities
This song is hot! Sweet, sexy vocals on top of a mellow disco beat – so smooth smooth smooth. I kind of feel, almost, sexy myself, listening to this song. The video though, a little too hip for me…
8. “Baby I’m Yours (feat. Irfane)” by Breakbot
I’ve been listening to so much Breakbot lately. Word has it, he’s working on his album as of late. This song though, it is quite the modern love song, so pure and true – I’m surprised it’s not on the radio (it should be). Definitely check out the video for this little gem. It’s truly a work of art.
7. “Watch The Glow” by Museum of Bellas Artes
This was the first original song by Museum of Bellas Artes to grace the interwebs and it still hasn’t lost its glow. The lackluster croon of the singer, the melodic backing vocals, all on top of a dancy beat. Ahh…I’m so confused. Should I shoe gaze or dance…decisions. Decisions!
6. “Dance Yrself Clean” by LCD Soundsystem
What a mindf*ck of a song. A three minute, under toned, spoken word introduction that tangentially spurts into an orgasm of synthesizers compelling you to dance. Genius. Yes. Rad? Of course. If you haven’t picked up This is Happening yet, get busy kid!
5. “O.N.E.” by Yeasayer
I’m sure some consider this song 2009, but whatever, the album was officially released in 2010, so nuh! Odd Blood is a stellar album, all killers and no fillers. It’s an album you have to let grow on you. And boy will it ever. Be sure to check out the video for “O.N.E.” – it’s kinda crazy.
4. “Not Over” by Bag Raiders
It was sooooooo hard to choose a favorite song from Bag Raiders’ debut self-titled album. So hard. Seriously, it is my favorite album of the year! Pop radness, top notch production, and beats and melodies sure to move you. “Not Over” is the type of song that makes me want to spin in circles with my hands towards the sky – praising it like someone was actually up there.
3. “Heaven’s On Fire” by The Radio Dept.
Thurston Moore opens this track with a nice little sound byte sure to incite some sort of emotion, either positive or negative. “Heaven’s Of Fire” is just the right amount of rock and pop, sugar and spice, sweet and sour – as is the album from which it came, Clinging To A Scheme.
2. “Pacific Coast Highway” by Beach Bum
I love obscure and unknown music. But really, forget the fact that no one has heard of Beach Bum – just listen to this song! It will take you on a journey – from the beach, down the road, to another beach. I love this song. So summery and light. Who knows if Beach Bum will ever release any more music, but as far as I’m concerned, this song is a perfect and lasting legacy to leave.
1. “Acid Washed” by Acid Washed
I first listened to this song without releasing that I had recently saw Acid Washed at Record Makers 10th Anniversary Celebration. I’m a sucker for instrumentals. And spacey ones – I’m definitely there. This song is really a triple threat of Acid Washed. The song is “Acid Washed” by the band Acid Washed from the album Acid Washed. Rad! This song is one of my favorite song to start my day with. It gets you going. It inspires. Holy cow, it’s the raddest song of 2010!
Be Rad. Enjoy!
Now that Duck Sauce’s “Barbra Streisand” got the official treatment, the official remixes are gonna start rolling in: as if the bootleg remixes weren’t enough. Oh well. In addition to more remixes, a few mash-ups have surfaced and they’re are a lot of fun. I hope to hear more of these. Shall we…
Party Ben couldn’t help but infuse some Michael Jackson into the saucy diva to make “Beat Sauce.” As if “Beat It” wasn’t fun enough, Barbra helps it move up a few notches. This one is loads of fun. I really like the use of the “Michael Jackson” in lieu of “Barbra Streisand.” Nice touch.
Rather than going pop, Just Banks turned to ever popular genre of mash-ups, hip-hop. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to the original “How Low” by Ludacris by I’ve heard the track remixed and mashed-up six ways to Sunday – so here’s another. Nothing less that top notch production here, I just wish it hit a little harder.
Barbra Streisand (Just Banks “How Low” Remix) – Duck Sauce
I’m not sure when I’ll get sick of “Barbra Streisand” but I don’t think it is any time soon.
Be Rad. Enjoy.
Duck Sauce are the dynamic duo consisting of Armand Van Helden and A-Trak. Maybe you know those names, maybe you don’t, but just know that both are prolific house music producers who know how to get your ass moving on the dance floor; when they come together the result is nothing less than pure gold.
Duck Sauce are gearing up for summer will soon be releasing their new song “Barbara Streisand” and like I said, it’s pure gold! I’ve yet to get my ears on the original, but O-God already remixed it and I can’t stop listening. Can’t stop I tell you! The beats, the hooks, the loops – it’s all there to make you dance and get your summer started. This song is a must for any summer playlist and I insist you give it a listen. You won’t be able to help yourself and dance – or at least try to.
Be Rad. Enjoy.
