Best Free Music of 2010

with one comment

Oh geez, this year just went by so fast for me. I finished college and now I just slave away at my job 40 hours a week. Mostly behind a computer, I work, reading an occasional music blog here and there, all the while almost always  listening to music. I have my go-to artists, of course, but I always have my ears perched for a new sound. There is a plethora of up and coming bands out there that are good – they just need to be heard. Not only that, but they want to be heard. These are the bands of 2010 that want to be heard and I want your hear.

Florrie

Florrie is the raddest underground pop-star of the year. While most of America was tuning in to the fame-fest that is Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and Ke$ha, I was anticipating the release of Florrie’s first official release, Introduction. The four song EP was self released and can be purchased on iTunes or on vinyl. Much like all of her previously released songs, the EP can also be directly downloaded, for free, from her website. And here’s that track that started it all, my favorite Florrie remix.

Creep Crawl Flash

Creep Crawl Flash is the work of Jacques Christo. He put out his Abroad EP earlier this year that is worthy of downloading. Recently though, he also put out a cover of a Siriusmo track, “MBOX.” The track is very laid back, makes me feel like I’m chillin’ on a million dollar yacht; makes me feel expensive. In additional to the Abroad EP, and “MBOX”, Creep Crawl Flash has plenty music free to download on his myspace page or on Soundcloud.

Computer Magic

Whoa. I don’t know where Computer Magic came from, but she hit me like an asteroid. Computer Magic is one person, one girl to be exact; she goes by the name of Danz. Her music is simple, upbeat organ pop. Danz has a unique voice and the layering skills to seduce any listener. Songs like “Electronic Fences” can take you on a journey, while other tracks like “Found Out” and “About You” are straight forward, yet compelling ballads. Don’t be afraid of the Computer Magic, it will only help you.

Computer Magic has two amazing EPs, Hiding From Our Time and Hiding From More of Our Time, which are available to download here. That’s 12 solid tracks! Go get it.

Casa del Mirto

Casa del Mirto has two rad EP’s you can download over on his myspace page. If you want to feel the buzz that is chillwave music, Casa del Mirto delivers. His fuzzy “glo-fi” sounds drop you off in some tropical setting, especially in the song “Jacket and Shoes.” When this song plays, oh, it’s like an instant party.

Redondo Beach

Redondo Beach brings your chill status to a whole new level. Mumbled words you can’t understand, funky bass lines coupled with some sexy synths. Oh, these tracks are divine. Head over to Redondo Beach’s site to download all their tracks. “She Loves Her” is my favorite: so smooth, so warm, and oh so soothing. Let those shoulders back. Relax…

Painted Palms

Painted Palms coin themselves as “experimental.” Since they said it, I’ll say that they kind of remind me of Animal Collective – but better. I mean, I’ve never been able to listen to Animal Collective – they bore me. But not these Painted Palms chaps. They more accessible. They open and close strong, respectively, with “All Of Us” and “Canopy,” but all the tracks are indeed solid. Click through to Painted Palms’ website for the download to the Canopy EP.

Fred Falke and Justin Faust remix Florrie

If you’ve read this blog at all, you ought to know that I have a soft spot for Florrie. I won’t go into how I think she’s an ideal pop star or how her music is fantastic – oh wait, I just did. Anywho, Florrie gives out ALL her music for free on her website and she recently announced some remixes of her new songs from two heavy hitting producers.

Fred Falke is no stranger to Florrie, but I’m always glad to hear another remix of his. Mr. Falke put his French hands all over “Give Me Your Love” and “You Wanna Start Something.” I must be honest – I’m not too impressed by either of these remixes. He just extended the edits and didn’t add much flavor – the originals stand out more, especially “Give Me Your Love.” Thinking about it now, maybe that was his point as they are “club edits” – I don’t know, what do you think them?

Then we have remix extraordinaire Justin Faust – he gives “Give Me Your Love” a proper remix that makes it a disco approved dance classic. Gotta love a good remix. Check it out below.

New Florrie – more awesome drum beats

leave a comment »

Florrie is a drummer. These words alone give her enough allure and intrigue to keep me coming back. She’s not a Meg White type drummer either, she’s more of a Keith Moon drummer. Just take a listen to the opening beat on one of Florrie’s newest song, “Give Me Your Love” – it’s a good one. And to know that the girl with the beautiful voice singing is also the one wailing away on the drums: it’s never ceases to amaze me. I unwillingly give my love to Florrie as she is an ideal pop star in the making.

“Give Me Your Love” and “You Wanna Start Something” are two new songs from Florrie and they are pure Florrie tracks. Previous tracks have been blessed with the production help of Fred Falke and they ended up taking on a feel as if they were his songs. This wasn’t bad, they just weren’t “Florrie enough.” Well, the two newest tracks she put out over on her website are exactly that –  all Florrie and all good. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Florrie is the type of pop star music needs. Ha. Maybe it’s actually, she’s the pop star I want and need. Oh well.

Head over to Florrie’s website to grab her two new tracks. They’re free! And she wants you to have them!

Florrie is an amazing 21 year old female artist from Bristol, England. She is not signed to any major music label but gosh darn it, she really deserves to be. Not only can she sing and write music, but she plays the drums! Move over Karen Carpenter, Florrie is here! With the help of house legend Fred Falke, she has been dropping tracks that are worthy tunes not only for the radio but definitely the dance floor too. Check out two tracks of her’s below and prepare to be hooked. Florrie + Fred Falke = pop music love.

Florrie – Call 911 (Fred Falke Remix)

Florrie – Panic Attack (Fred Falke Extended Remix)

Be sure to check out Florrie’s website to get the skinny on her as well as more free tracks.
